2.4.2 Page Titled

Conformance level: A
Criterion released in WCAG version: 2.0

Official description of the success criterion

Web pages have titles that describe topic or purpose.

What to do?

Ensure each web page has a descriptive and informative title.

Why is it important?

Helps users understand the purpose of the page quickly.

Common pitfalls

A title might not start with a unique part, which makes it hard to separate from other titles.

An implementation with multiple steps might share the title.

How to test for it?

Automated tools can catch if the title tag is missing. The quality of the tags needs manual checking.

This criterion doesn't apply to mobile applications.

How to take this criterion into account in development?

Ensure that the page H1 heading (or a custom page title heading) is added as the <title> element in <head>.
