2.2.6 Timeouts

Conformance level: AAA
Criterion released in WCAG version: 2.1

Official description of the success criterion

Users are warned of the duration of any user inactivity that could cause data loss, unless the data is preserved for more than 20 hours when the user does not take any actions.

What to do?

Ensure that users are warned about timeouts, especially when data will be lost due to inactivity, and give them the option to extend the session or the ability to save their work.

Why is it important?

Timeouts can be problematic for users with disabilities who may require more time to read content, understand instructions, or interact with web elements. Providing warnings and the option to extend sessions ensures that these users do not lose their work or become frustrated by unexpected timeouts. This improves the overall usability and accessibility of the web content for users who need more time.
